Where are we really?

Image
Unless you’re like our mate, Dave, many will not know where we really are, so I’ll try to give it some context and answer some questions that you might have had. San Miguel De Allende is almost slap bang in the middle of Mexico in the State of Guanajuato, which is one of the 32 states (Estados Unidos de Mexico). I’m not going to replace Google, but the total population is around 127m people. It is NOT a small country. For instance, for us to drive to Houson, Texas, will take around 16 to 18 hours. Mexico uses the same time zone as Texas and also, for some reason or other, practices daylight savings. Our current home is in Atotonilco, a small municipality about 16km from “Town”. There are a number of San Miguels in Mexico (and the catholic world), so I’ll just refer to it as SMA as this is not a school exam and I don’t have to use up lines on the page. How did we choose SMA?   It was easy really - SMA chose us. Chip has a home here which he wanted to be occupied and looked a

Shopping in Spanish

Buenos dias, tardes, noches mi amigos If any of you ever thought that SA had mozzies, think again. I could stick a mozzie coil up my arse, light it and I think they’d still bite me. Nes and Chip seem unscathed, so I’m guessing it’s just the amazing attraction that I am for all living beings. Now our clothing is unpacked and our amazing host has seen to all of our needs (okay, don’t stretch it) we’re ready to get ourselves down in this adventure. Apart from a little paperwork that needs to be done (roflol), some shopping and a car, we’re good to go. I don’t want to bore our loyal readers so I am NOT going to dwell on the paperwork, suffice it to say that there is a fair amount. BUT, when you know the right people, it is simply a matter of time and a few visits to various offices. Thanks, mostly to Chip, and then Alphonso, our way was smoothed considerably.   I’ll list them so that, when you move to San Miguel, you know who to call; Mayeli Murillo. Dealt with our temporary resi

We're Here!! Estados Unidos De Mexico

2 nd May 2021 and we’re in Frankfurt for a whistle stop (7 hours), then on our way to Mexico City, with Lufthansa. We arrived on time (14 hours later - it’s a German Airline, what did you expect) full of trepidation and excitement. Luckily Nes and I had managed more than enough seats, and were able to sleep, stretched out (another Covid positive), pretty much all the way. We’d heard some negative stories on getting through Mexican passport control and customs, but we were well rested and ready for it. In the back of my mind was some nervousness because of half a Clicks pharmacy in our luggage and – nothing happened!! This was our first experience of Mexican officials and people and they set the bar high. To date, we have had nothing but smiles, helpfulness and welcomes from everyone who we have met. Lovely people. Straight on to the Courtyard by Marriot at the airport – just a little walk away – and we were here, in Mexico, ready for the start of a new life. Just popping across to

Let me first say that I will not be mentioning people by full name as I don’t want to add to the Google searches and invasive social media data gathering. While all of the selling, banking, utilities, house sales, vehicle sales etc. are happening, NOONE prepares you for the next bit. It is this bit where it gets real and you realise just who your amazing support group is. This group is both family and friends – what they do do for you and how much you will miss them. From the day we announced the big move, quietly and only with family and close friends, our supporters came to the fore.   By far the majority were so excited for us and encouraged us from the day we made the decision. We know that this encouragement and excitement was bitter sweet, as it was from our side, but we couldn’t have done without it. Big Guy and I had been through months of frenetic activity, sleeplessness and organising (when we slept). She might not like packing and approaches it like an enemy to be v

Selling your shit - some advice

We’re on our way. Wait – not quite yet. People asked a few questions in the earlier update; –         this was all done on our Green South African Passports and –         NO – we didn’t consider Salford. “Let’s sell our shit” has a whole lot behind it that few will understand. First call was to Jan at Bryanston Auctioneers. info@bryanstonauctioneers.co.za and +27 11 463 4666 – what a delightful man and a really great help. He valued our stuff and paid, immediately, for some of the smaller valuables that had been hidden under the bed for years. The values that we got from him gave us a benchmark for private sales and (he gave us two values – immediate settlement, or “we think we can sell it for this” and they then give you the value if we do), anything that wasn’t sold, they would come and pack up our house, give us a value and pay us 2 days later. Although much of the listed stuff had gone, they did this and were accurate and fair. As I say, a delight. Enter Facebook Marke

Holy Shit - It's happening

Going out with a BANG and not a WHIMPER comes to mind while I write this little excerpt. Those of you who have followed me in the past know that there’s no such thing as a “little” excerpt when it come to my writing. In 2020 – the year of Covid (dudum) my first (and only) wife and I decided that Covid had a positive (pun intended) – it led you to think about what you were doing and what you should be doing. Issues of our bodies, one and two, had left the country – with no intention of coming back. So what the hell were we doing in SA apart from just existing in an ever-spiralling, no way forward environment, collecting stuff? We had several chats with Issues 1 and 2, knowing that something had to change. Being the troopers that they are, they supported (pushed) us wholeheartedly in discussing a change. They could see that we were tired, grumpy, bored and stuck – and probably just growing old. We just didn’t know what form this change would take. Enter the Texan (I can hear The Go
